Marley: NZ All-Stars Celebrate The Legend announced for Tauranga & Havelock North
New Zealand’s finest artists will come together to celebrate the legend Bob Marley … in two sensational concerts this summer.
Marley - NZ All-Stars Celebrate The Legend will be staged at Wharepai Domain, Tauranga, on Friday 9 December and Black Barn Vineyard, Havelock North, on Saturday 10 December.
Some of New Zealand’s biggest artists will pay homage to one of the greatest influences on NZ music. Tiki Taane (Tauranga only), Boh Runga, Logan Bell (Katchafire), Ria Hall, Laughton Kora (Kinetic, Kora), Jason Kerrison (OpShop, Babysitters Circus and Fungi), Anna Coddington, Fran Kora (Kora) and P Digsss (Shapeshifter) will perform Marley's biggest hits including Get Up Stand Up, 3 Little Birds, Stir It Up, Redemption Song, Turn Your Lights Down Low, Buffalo Soldier, Punky Reggae Party, Exodus, No Woman No Cry, One Love and many many more.
They will be backed by the NZ All-Stars band, featuring Grenville Bell, guitar and Leon Davy, percussion (both from Katchafire); Fran Kora, bass and vocals (Kora); Lucien Johnson, sax and Barrett Hocking, trumpet (both from The Black Seeds); Paul Russell, drums (Stomp and Supergroove); Joel Shadbolt, guitar (L.A.B); Shelton Woolright, guest drums (I Am Giant, Kinetic and Blindspott) and Godfrey de Grut (keys for Che Fu, Elemeno P and Brooke Fraser), with our very own I-Threes on backing vocals, Boh, Ria and Anna.
The Modern Maori Quartet – who open each concert – will have reggae fans “melting like golden syrup on a piece of hot fried bread!”. The MMQ crooners are James Tito, Maaka Pohatu, Matariki Whatarau and our very own Lion King, Matu Ngaropo.
Concert promoter Jackie Sanders says the NZ All-Stars project brings together some of New Zealand’s finest artists to recognise and celebrate Bob Marley’s legacy.
“It is an honour to be able to celebrate this legend. His music continues to influence and have an impact on our lives. He was a lover and a fighter. His themes of love, family and togetherness still resonate as strongly as his cry for social justice and revolution. This will be a unique and special concert series.”
Today, Bob Marley would now have been 71 years old.
“My father had a true revolutionary spirit that continues to inspire and empower people of all ages and ethnicities. The message of the music doesn’t have an expiration date. Every generation is hearing it with fresh ears and connecting with the music in a new way.” Cedella Marley, Feb 2015
